The heart of the Johnson Amendment revolves around prevent religious organizations, primarily churches, from getting involved in politics by way of influencing their congregation. Now, there are a number of reasons that this is a part of our system. The primary reason is that religious establishments do not pay taxes and thus should not be able to abuse their tax-free exemption to try and sway political discourse. Despite the Johnson Act being on the books since 1954, many churches and religious organizations around the country have been trying to flout the legality of the law — thus forcing the IRS to become involved.

Nowadays, people like President Trump are intentionally thumbing their noses at the protected and established laws on the books regarding religious separation from politics. President Trump himself signed an executive order this past May which forced the IRS to stop acting and enforcing the Johnson Amendment. Of course, executive orders do not count as laws and the IRS is under no obligation to listen to the order. However, by signing this EO Trump made it clear to his supporters that he does not respect the Johnson Amendment. Now, groups like End Citizens United are trying to raise awareness and supported for the respected laws on our books. Visit:https://twitter.com/stopbigmoney?lang=en
