The team at End Citizens United have been working hard over the past two years in order to introduce measures to scale back the impact of the disastrous Supreme Court ruling in 2010, regarding the conservative group Citizens United. End Citizens United is a political action committee led by PAC President Tiffany Muller. After the election of Donald Trump to the White House, Muller and her team realized that they had a tough task ahead of them. Looking past more than just the Citizens United ruling, which opened the floodgates of lobbyists and dark money in Washington, End Citizens United is also taking aim to protect the Johnson Amendment from an unheard of attack launched by America’s right wing.
The Johnson Amendment is a ruling that was established in order to keep religious money out of the world of politics. In doing so, the Johnson Amendment further encouraged and enforced the separation of Church and State. Anybody who has payed attention tot he political scene realizes just how important this amendment is and has been. The Johnson Act was put into law back in 1954 and it was introduced by Lyndon B. Johnson before being signed by Dwight Eisenhower. The effort to make the Johnson Act a law was a bipartisan effort that passed with little controversy. However, as the years have gone by Washington D.C. has ruptured and split into two different political parties with little to no common grown. While Democrats and progressive PACs like End Citizens United have been willing to cross the aisle, there has been little-to-no reach back from the right wing. The heart of the Johnson Amendment revolves around prevent religious organizations, primarily churches, from getting involved in politics by way of influencing their congregation. Now, there are a number of reasons that this is a part of our system. The primary reason is that religious establishments do not pay taxes and thus should not be able to abuse their tax-free exemption to try and sway political discourse. Despite the Johnson Act being on the books since 1954, many churches and religious organizations around the country have been trying to flout the legality of the law — thus forcing the IRS to become involved.
Nowadays, people like President Trump are intentionally thumbing their noses at the protected and established laws on the books regarding religious separation from politics. President Trump himself signed an executive order this past May which forced the IRS to stop acting and enforcing the Johnson Amendment. Of course, executive orders do not count as laws and the IRS is under no obligation to listen to the order. However, by signing this EO Trump made it clear to his supporters that he does not respect the Johnson Amendment. Now, groups like End Citizens United are trying to raise awareness and supported for the respected laws on our books. Visit:https://twitter.com/stopbigmoney?lang=en
